Grief and bereavement can be experienced at any age and in any stage of life. When this happens, a period of mourning usually follows. Grief can also be the result of a divorce, retirement, job loss, a parent suddenly walking out on the family, or a child leaving the home for the first time.
For most people, general symptoms of grief can be physical, spiritual, and behavioral. Children and adolescents experience grief in accordance with their developmental stage. Symptoms and stages of grief according to Kubler Ross, can include the following:
- Denial and isolation
Although these symptoms were formatted from interviewing patients who were terminally ill, clients tend to experience some or all of these symptoms during major life transitions as well as death and dying. We believe grief is complicated and a very personal experience. Once thought to be a linear progression, we now know these stages may occur in multiples or not at all. In many life events we let go of some of the past and learn to embrace the present and what it brings to our future. This sometimes painful yet exhilarating re-shaping of identity can be done in a safe environment at Insights Counseling Services
